The rod or the board is usually stuffed or covered with waterproof sealant to avoid rusting or deterioration and keep it strong. One end of the joint is joined together with the slab while it is still wet and has not completed its formation. While the other slab is tapped before the dowel is inserted in it. This provides the space to make it slide easily therefore keeping the support but would not hinder expansion.

The non – doweled concrete expansion is not commonly used compared to the doweled joint. This does not provide the same strong hold as the doweled joint. It is mainly used only for areas where the secondary slab cannot be tapped. It is a compressible board found between the two surfaces while the concrete is not yet dry. To prevent the joint from seeping into the concrete, a cap board is also placed.   The cap board is then removed when the concrete is dry and waterproof sealant is placed again to avoid corrosion.
