Concrete Sidewalks
Constructing concrete sidewalks is a work of art and very laborious. The best idea for
pouring concrete is to start with a small job as the concrete turns from a pourable mixture to a hard compound very
fast. The easy all season access to your home or area is simple to achieve with nearly low maintenance concrete
sideways. In addition to this, they can also add to the beauty of the home. To build a concrete sidewalk, follow
these steps:
• Set the concrete sidewalks form. The general width used by all is three to four for main walks and two
feel for service walks.
• Set the form of the concrete sidewalk at a height that is in level with the existing concrete sideways or at
a level that is very close to the of the ground surface level. This will allow easy maintenance of the concrete
sidewalk.
• Place a moving bulkhead at the working end. This will allow you to pour the concrete mixture comfortably.
This works well when ready mix concrete mixtures are used as it leads to very little wastage of concrete.
• Prepare the concrete sidewalk area carefully by removing all the dirt. Make sure you reach the depth and
make the place dirt free. All soil should be carefully compacted to avoid tilting, sinking or cracking of the
concrete sidewalk.
• Get some help from family or friends if the area of the concrete sidewalk is large as this is a very
tiresome and time consuming job.
• Use a cross slope of 1/8 of an inch per foot in width from any structure nearby to assist with drainage.
• Use asphalt - impregnated joint materials at places where the concrete sidewalk gets in touch with a
building or any other structure.
• Cut control joints every four to five feet along the length of the concrete sidewalk.
If you want to cut or remodel your concrete sidewalk, read on. If you are planning to demolish the old concrete
sidewalk and install a new one, stop. A better idea is to just cut a section of the concrete sidewalk as that would
cost much less and would be easier. Additionally it would also look different.
• For cutting or remodelling a concrete sidewalk, you will need a diamond concrete cutting blade which can
be purchased from the local home improvement store or hardware store. It is also possible to rent the cut off saw
and mount the diamond blade into the saw.
• Make a straight line across the section of the concrete sidewalk that you plan to cut.
• Make sure you read the saw operators manual and are familiar with all the instructions and precautions.
Thus, it is recommended to wear proper protective equipment which includes protective clothing, safety goggles or a
face shield, gloves and a helmet.
• Arrange the diamond blade in a way that it is parallel to the line you plan to cut. Prompt the saw trigger
to turn the saw on and push the saw through the concrete sidewalk gradually and progressively.
• Chip with the large iron pry bar to remove the concrete piece that you have just cut. Probably renting a
jack hammer would also turn out to be helpful.
The tools that are used for this process are sharp and can be dangerous. It is very important to remember that
all tools that you use should be in good quality when being used. Additionally a good supply of cold water and an
experienced and strong person operating the machinery should be available.
